In any given year roughly one in thirteen Australian adults, around 7.5 per cent, lives with an affective disorder such as depression. In the most recent ABS national study, close to one in five adults aged 16 to 85 in New South Wales, about 19.5 per cent, experienced a mental disorder over a twelve month period, so if the colour has drained out of your days you are far from alone in this state.

People keep saying the same thing.

One conversation in, most clients say they’ve finally been understood.

— Simone

“When I came to Christina I was drowning in darkness… now I’m finally thriving again.”

— Shannon

“Due to her mediumship I was able to see core issues that I wasn’t able to recognise before.”

— Ellie

Depression does not always look like sadness

  • You get through the working week on autopilot, then have nothing left for the people or things you once loved.
  • Sleep has stopped being restful, whether you cannot switch off or you cannot get out of bed.
  • A low, grey hum sits underneath everything, even on days that should feel good.
  • You feel oddly invisible, moving through a crowded city yet strangely disconnected from it.
  • Part of you wants to understand why this happened, what your body and heart have been carrying, rather than just papering over it.

In a city that never really slows down, it is easy to keep performing while quietly running on empty, and to assume everyone else is coping better than you.

How Christina works

How Christina works with depression

There is no pressure here to think positive or count your blessings. Christina starts by understanding what your nervous system and your story have been holding, sometimes for years. From that honest starting point, small pockets of hope and movement tend to open on their own.

Understanding first

Before anything changes, you get to be properly heard, so we can make sense of how the heaviness took root and what it has been protecting you from.

Gentle pace

Sessions move at the speed you can manage, with no homework you dread and no expectation to arrive sounding fine.

Practical and deeper

We work with the everyday load of Sydney life and, if you want to, the deeper emotional and spiritual layers underneath it.

Go deeper

Want to understand depression a little more first

This page is deliberately short. If you would like more context before you reach out, the blog goes further into how depression shows up, why it lingers and what gentle support can look like. It is there to help you feel informed, not sold to.

About Christina

The counsellor behind Soul Counselling.

Christina Feyes founded Soul Counselling in 2016 and has spent more than a decade sitting with people through their hardest seasons. Her background spans psychology, social work and human services, and she is a counsellor rather than a psychologist, so she does not diagnose or prescribe. She works with clients right across Australia, including throughout Sydney and greater New South Wales.

What clients tend to value is the blend she brings. Grounded, informed counselling shaped by real clinical knowledge, paired with a warm intuitive sense of what is really going on beneath the words. That means sessions can hold the practical realities of your week and the deeper emotional currents underneath, without ever forcing either.

Common questions

Before you book.

If your question is not here, the free 15-minute assessment is the easiest way to ask it.

Is depression counselling expensive?

You will not find fees or prices quoted on this page, because the first step costs nothing. Christina offers a free 15-minute assessment so you can talk things through, get a feel for how she works and ask anything you like, with no card details and no obligation to continue. It is genuinely a nothing to lose starting point. If you decide to keep going after that, the details are discussed openly with you first, so you are never surprised and never pushed.

Do I need a referral to start?

No referral is needed. You do not have to see your GP first or organise any paperwork before reaching out. Many people in Sydney simply book the free 15-minute chat directly when they feel ready, or when a friend or family member gently nudges them to. If you would prefer to involve your GP or another practitioner in your wider care, you are welcome to, but nothing is required to begin a conversation with Christina.

Is there a Soul Counselling clinic in Sydney I can visit?

There is no clinic or office in Sydney. Soul Counselling works online across the whole of Australia, and Christina’s only physical base is in Southport on the Gold Coast. In practice that means you meet by video or phone from wherever you are, whether that is a flat in Surry Hills, a house in Penrith or somewhere quieter on the Central Coast. For most people the convenience of skipping a cross-city commute is a real relief.

What if I do not even know where to start?

That is completely okay, and it is one of the most common things people say. You do not need to arrive with a tidy explanation or the right words. In the free 15-minute chat you can simply describe how life feels at the moment, even if that is just flat, tired or numb, and Christina will help make sense of it with you. Part of her role is to gently draw out what matters, so you are never expected to have it figured out beforehand.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number, because everyone’s situation is different. Some people come for a short, focused stretch to move through a particular low patch, while others value ongoing support over a longer season. Christina will not lock you into a program or pressure you to keep booking. You stay in control of the pace and can pause or stop whenever it feels right for you. The free 15-minute chat is a good place to talk through what might suit your circumstances.

What if I feel too flat or exhausted to talk?

Feeling too drained to speak is often part of depression itself, not a sign that counselling is not for you. Sessions move slowly and gently, and there is no expectation to fill every silence or perform being fine. Christina is used to sitting with people who can barely find words at first, and she will meet you there rather than push. Sometimes simply being heard, without having to hold it all together, is where the smallest sense of relief begins.

Can online counselling really help when I am struggling at home?

Yes. Many people find that being in their own space, on their own couch with a cup of tea, actually makes it easier to open up than a formal room ever could. Video and phone sessions let you access steady support without a long trip across Sydney, and the connection with Christina is warm and personal despite the screen. For low mood, burnout and disconnection, that ease of access often means people reach out sooner and stay engaged for longer.

What if I am in crisis right now?

Counselling with Soul Counselling is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about ending your life, please call 000 straight away, or reach Lifeline any time on 13 11 14 for free, confidential support. These services are staffed around the clock and are there for exactly these moments. Once you are safe, Christina is here for the ongoing, gentler work of understanding what has been happening and finding your way back towards feeling more like yourself.

Depression support across Sydney

Real support for the pressures of Sydney life

Sydney is often named the most expensive city in the country, and that pressure lands quietly in people’s chests. Punishing rents and mortgages, hour-plus commutes from the outer suburbs, and a grind culture that treats exhaustion as normal can slowly flatten anyone. Add the strange loneliness of being one small person in an enormous, fast-moving city, and it is easy to see why so many feel worn down.

  • Professionals in the CBD and Inner West running on empty behind a capable front.
  • Families in Western Sydney around Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith and Liverpool feeling the weight of long days and tight budgets.
  • People in the Eastern Suburbs, on the North Shore or the Northern Beaches who look fine on paper yet feel hollow inside.
  • Anyone out in the Sutherland Shire or the Hills who is tired of pretending they are coping.

Sessions are held online and by phone across Sydney and all of Australia. You can also explore all Sydney counselling services.

No commute, no waiting room

Support that reaches you at home, wherever you are in Sydney

In a city this spread out, the thought of crossing town to sit in a waiting room can be enough to put you off getting help at all. Soul Counselling is online only, so there is no clinic to travel to and no traffic to fight. You can meet from your lounge room in Manly or your kitchen in Campbelltown.

Christina is a qualified counsellor and all sessions happen by video or phone, at a pace that feels manageable. You do not need to arrive polished or with the energy to explain your whole life at once. You can simply show up as you are, and we start from there.
