Research suggests that around 75 percent of Australians live through a traumatic event at some point, and roughly 11 percent will experience post-traumatic stress, though most people do not go on to develop a lasting disorder. In Queensland, the ABS 2020 to 2022 study found that about 23.7 percent of people aged 16 to 85, close to one in four, experienced a mental disorder in a single year.

When old trauma is still shaping today

  • Small, everyday things can set off a reaction that feels far bigger than the moment seems to call for.
  • You notice yourself shutting down, freezing, over-pleasing others or staying quietly on high alert.
  • Memories or physical sensations can surface as if the past is happening right now, not years ago.
  • Trust, boundaries, a sense of safety and your own worth can feel shaky or hard to hold onto.
  • Part of you wants support, and part of you fears being pushed to open up before you are ready.

Far North life can be isolating, and being far from home or riding out a long wet season can make all of this feel heavier. You do not have to carry it on your own.

How Christina works

How trauma counselling works here

Trauma work is not about reliving the worst moments or explaining everything at once. It is about building enough safety that your nervous system can slowly settle, in your time and on your terms. You stay in choice the whole way through.

Safety first

We begin by helping you feel steady and grounded, not by diving into the hardest memories. There is no forced disclosure and no pressure to retell your story. We move only as fast as feels manageable, and you can pause or slow down at any point.

Body aware depth

Trauma lives in the body as much as the mind, so we gently notice what happens in your breath, tension and reactions. Learning to recognise these survival patterns, without being overwhelmed by them, helps your system begin to loosen its grip and feel safer.

Root level healing

Rather than only managing symptoms, we make space to understand where the patterns came from and what they were protecting. As old wounds are met with care and understanding, many people find a steadier, more spacious sense of themselves emerging over time.

Go deeper

Reading that might help along the way

If you are still deciding whether counselling feels right, gentle reading can be a low-pressure first step. Our blog explores trauma, the nervous system and healing in plain, compassionate language, with no expectation that you do anything before you are ready.

What we can work through

Trauma themes we gently work with

People come to trauma counselling carrying many different experiences. Wherever you are in Cairns or the wider Far North, these are some of the themes we can explore together, slowly and with care.

Childhood and developmental wounds

Early experiences of neglect, fear or feeling unsafe can shape how you relate to yourself and others long into adulthood. We work gently with these old patterns, without blame, so you can begin to feel more secure in who you are now.

Shock, accidents and natural disasters

Far North Queensland knows collective trauma through cyclones, floods and other emergencies. A sudden accident, loss or disaster can leave your body braced for danger. We help you process that shock at a pace that feels bearable, not overwhelming.

Relationship and emotional trauma

Betrayal, controlling relationships or ongoing emotional hurt can quietly erode trust and self-worth. Together we make space to understand what happened and to gently rebuild your sense of safety, boundaries and value in connection with others.

Living with hyper-alertness and shutdown

When your system is stuck in survival, you might swing between feeling wired and feeling numb. We work with these states kindly and practically, helping you find more moments of calm and a wider window where life feels manageable.

Common questions

Before you book.

If your question is not here, the free 15-minute assessment is the easiest way to ask it.

Is trauma counselling expensive in Cairns?

You can start without paying anything. Christina offers a free 15-minute phone assessment with no card required and no obligation to continue. It is a low-pressure way to see whether the support feels right for you before you decide on anything further. There is genuinely nothing to lose by having that first gentle conversation, and you stay in choice about any next step.

Do I need a referral to begin?

No, you do not need a referral or a doctor’s letter to reach out. You can contact Soul Counselling directly and arrange your free 15-minute assessment whenever you feel ready. Christina is a counsellor rather than a psychologist and does not diagnose, prescribe or provide medical treatment, so you can simply get in touch and start from wherever you are today.

Is there a Soul Counselling clinic in Cairns?

There is no clinic in Cairns. All Far North Queensland sessions are held online by video or phone, which means you can access support from Cairns, the northern beaches, Edmonton, Smithfield or far more remote parts of the region. Christina’s only physical base is in Southport on the Gold Coast, but her online work reaches clients right across Australia.

Can online trauma counselling really reach a remote Far North town?

Yes. As long as you have a phone signal or an internet connection, you can take part from wherever you are, whether that is the Atherton Tablelands, the Cassowary Coast, Cape York or the Torres Strait. This is one of the reasons online support matters so much up here, where in person services are scarce and distances between towns are large.

Will I have to retell everything that happened to me?

No. There is no forced disclosure and no requirement to retell your story in detail. Trauma work here is about building enough safety for your nervous system to settle, not about pushing you to relive painful events. You share only what you choose, when you choose, and we move at a pace that feels manageable for you the whole way through.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number, because everyone’s experience of trauma is different. Some people find a handful of sessions helpful, while others prefer steadier, longer term support. There is no pressure to commit to a set course. You and Christina can talk about what feels right for you, and you stay in control of the pace and how long you continue.

Is online trauma counselling private and effective?

Yes. Sessions are held privately over a secure video connection or by phone, from wherever feels safe for you. Many people find online trauma support just as helpful as sitting in a room, and often more comfortable, because they can be in their own familiar space. For people across the Far North, it also removes long travel and makes consistent support far more achievable.

What if I am in crisis right now?

Soul Counselling is not a crisis service and cannot provide emergency help. If you are in immediate danger, please call 000. For urgent support you can reach Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, both available anytime. The Blue Knot Helpline on 1300 657 380 offers specialist trauma support, and 13YARN on 13 92 76 provides culturally safe support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

I feel nervous about starting. Is that normal?

Completely normal, especially with trauma. Feeling unsure or hesitant is often part of how your system has kept you safe, and it is welcome here. You do not have to feel ready or certain to begin. The free 15-minute assessment exists for exactly this reason, so you can simply talk, notice how it feels and decide in your own time whether a next step feels right.

Trauma support across Cairns

Trauma counselling that reaches all of Far North Queensland

Cairns is a remote regional hub where mental health services are stretched thin across enormous distances, so being able to connect online genuinely matters. Many people here work in tourism, hospitality and seasonal or shift roles, and a large transient and backpacker population lives far from home while carrying older, unhealed trauma. Far North Queensland also knows collective trauma through cyclones and natural disasters, and the wet season heat, humidity and isolation can intensify distress, especially in remote communities where in person help is scarce. We also acknowledge, with respect, the significant collective and intergenerational trauma carried by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across this region, and support the value of culturally safe, Indigenous-led care alongside this work.

  • Support that reaches the CBD, the Esplanade and the northern beaches at Palm Cove and Trinity Beach.
  • Online sessions for Edmonton, Smithfield and out across the Atherton Tablelands and the Cassowary Coast.
  • A steady option for people in Cape York, the Torres Strait and remote towns where services are hard to reach.
  • Paced, trauma-aware care for seasonal workers, travellers and locals far from their support networks.

Sessions are held online and by phone across Cairns and all of Australia, so support fits around your life. You can also explore all Cairns counselling services.

Safe enough to do the work

Support that reaches the whole Far North, wherever you are

You do not need to travel long distances or sit in a waiting room to find trauma support. Culturally safe and Indigenous-led trauma services also exist across the region, and 13YARN on 13 92 76 offers culturally safe support for First Nations people. Christina’s work is offered respectfully alongside that, never over it.

As a qualified counsellor, Christina offers trauma-aware sessions that are paced to you, so you stay in control the whole way through. You can connect from wherever feels safe, whether that is home in Cairns, a quiet room on the Tablelands or a remote community up north. Nothing is pushed before you are ready, and you can slow down or pause at any time.
