Research suggests around 75 percent of Australians will live through a traumatic event at some point, and close to 11 percent will experience post-traumatic stress, though most people do not go on to carry a lasting disorder. In the ACT, the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2020 to 2022 study found roughly one in four adults, about 25.5 percent, met the criteria for a mental disorder in the previous year.

When the past still shapes how safe today feels

  • Small, ordinary moments set off a reaction that feels far bigger than the situation seems to warrant.
  • You notice yourself shutting down, freezing, over-pleasing, or staying quietly on high alert without ever fully relaxing.
  • Certain memories or body sensations arrive as if they are happening now, not as something that ended long ago.
  • Trust, boundaries, feeling safe with others, and a steady sense of your own worth have become harder to hold onto.
  • Part of you wants support, and part of you is afraid of being pushed to open up before you are ready.

In a city that prizes composure and high performance, many people keep functioning beautifully on the outside while carrying trauma quietly and alone underneath.

How Christina works

How trauma-informed counselling works here

You never have to retell the worst of it to be helped. This work is about restoring a felt sense of safety, at your pace, with you staying in choice the whole way through.

Safety first

We begin by settling the nervous system, not by digging into the story. You set the pace, choose what to share, and can pause at any point. Nothing is forced, and consent is checked as we go so the space stays steady and yours.

Body-aware depth

Trauma is held in the body as much as the mind, so we gently notice what your system is doing rather than only analysing it. Learning to recognise tension, freeze, and overwhelm helps you meet strong feelings with more calm and choice.

Root-level healing

Over time, and only when you feel ready, we can turn toward the deeper roots of the patterns you carry. The aim is not endless retelling but a quieter nervous system, more self-trust, and a life that feels less run by the past.

Go deeper

Reading that meets you gently

Sometimes it helps to understand what is happening before you speak to anyone. Our writing on trauma, the nervous system, and recovery is calm and free of pressure, so you can take it in at your own speed.

What we can work through

Trauma experiences we gently support

People come to trauma counselling for many reasons. Whatever brought you here, you will be met with respect and without judgement.

Single-event shock and accidents

A crash, a medical emergency, a sudden loss, or a frightening incident can leave the body braced long after the danger has passed. We help your system learn that the moment is over and that it is safe to soften again.

Childhood and developmental wounds

Hurt that began early can shape how safe you feel with others as an adult. Gently and without pressure, we make room for those younger parts of you and the patterns they created, so old survival responses can slowly ease.

Relationship and betrayal trauma

Being hurt inside a close relationship can shake your trust in yourself and in others. We work at a pace that rebuilds a sense of safety, boundaries, and self-worth, without asking you to relive every painful detail.

Service and occupational trauma

Roles in Defence, emergency response, and other high-responsibility work can leave marks that are rarely spoken about. This is a discreet, respectful space to set down what you have been carrying, in your own time.

Common questions

Before you book.

If your question is not here, the free 15-minute assessment is the easiest way to ask it.

Is trauma counselling expensive?

You can start without spending anything. Soul Counselling offers a free 15-minute assessment with no card required and no obligation, so you can get a feel for how it works before deciding on anything further. It is a low-pressure way to see whether this feels like the right support for you, with nothing to lose. From there, you stay in choice about whether and how you continue.

Do I need a referral to begin?

No referral is needed. You can reach out directly and book your free 15-minute assessment whenever you feel ready. You do not need to speak to a doctor first or gather any paperwork. Christina is a counsellor, not a psychologist, and does not diagnose or prescribe, so this is simply a caring, confidential conversation about what you are carrying and how gentle support might help.

Is there a Soul Counselling clinic in Canberra?

There is no physical clinic in Canberra. Soul Counselling works entirely online and by phone with people across the ACT and all of Australia. The only physical base is in Southport on the Gold Coast. For Canberra clients, everything happens by secure video or phone, which many people find more private and far easier to fit around work and family life.

Will I have to retell everything that happened?

No. You never have to recount the details of what happened to be helped here. Trauma-informed counselling focuses on restoring a sense of safety in your body and nervous system, not on forced disclosure or reliving the past. You choose what to share and when, and you can pause at any time. Healing does not require you to walk back through the worst moments before you are ready.

Is online trauma counselling private and effective?

Yes. Sessions are held over secure video or phone, and you can join from home or anywhere that feels safe, with no waiting room and no chance of being recognised. Many people find working from their own space actually helps them feel calmer and more in control. Paced, trauma-aware counselling can be genuinely supportive online, and for those who value discretion it often feels more private than an in-person visit.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no set number. Trauma work moves at the pace of your nervous system, not a fixed timetable. Some people come for a short season to steady themselves, while others value longer, gentle support. We regularly check in on what is helping, and you stay in charge of how often you meet and when to pause or finish. The aim is your safety and self-trust, not endless appointments.

How do I keep this discreet in a small city?

Working online means there is no local clinic to attend and no risk of being seen in a waiting room, which matters in a connected city like Canberra. Sessions are confidential and held wherever feels private to you. You control what you share and with whom. This is a quiet, respectful space to set down what you carry, entirely separate from your workplace and professional circles.

What if I am in crisis or need urgent help?

Soul Counselling is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, please call 000. For urgent emotional support you can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, both available around the clock. For specialist help with complex trauma, the Blue Knot Helpline on 1300 657 380 offers trauma-informed guidance. Please reach out to these services first if you need support right now.

A gentle first step, whenever you are ready

You can begin with a free 15-minute assessment. There is no card required and no obligation, just a chance to feel out whether Christina feels safe enough for you to consider a next step. With nothing to lose, you decide what happens from there.

Trauma support across Canberra

Trauma carried quietly beneath Canberra’s composure

Canberra runs on capability. In a city built around the public service, professional life, and demanding, high-responsibility roles, there is strong pressure to stay composed and keep performing, so trauma is often masked behind competence and carried privately. A significant Defence, veteran, and public-safety presence means many people hold service-related and operational experiences that rarely get spoken aloud. Being posted in and living far from family can add a quiet isolation. In a small, interconnected city where discretion matters, online counselling offers a genuinely private way to be heard.

  • For high-performing professionals in Civic, Barton, and the inner south who look fine on paper yet feel braced and depleted underneath.
  • For Defence, veteran, and public-safety people carrying service-related or operational strain they have kept to themselves.
  • For those posted in from interstate, living far from family in Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden, or Tuggeranong.
  • For anyone who values discretion and wants support that stays entirely private in a small, connected city.

Sessions are held online and by phone across Canberra and all of Australia, so support fits around your life. You can also explore all Canberra counselling services.
