Research suggests around 75 percent of Australians will live through a traumatic event at some point, and roughly 11 percent may go on to experience PTSD, though most people never develop a lasting disorder. In Western Australia, the ABS 2020 to 2022 study found about 23.1 percent of people aged 16 to 85 experienced a mental disorder in a single year, so if you are struggling, you are far from alone.

When the past will not stay in the past

  • Small, seemingly ordinary moments set off a wave of fear, anger, or tears that feels far bigger than the trigger.
  • You notice yourself shutting down, freezing, over pleasing others, or staying quietly on high alert, even when things are calm.
  • Memories, images, or body sensations arrive as though they are happening right now, not years ago.
  • Trust, boundaries, safety, and a steady sense of your own worth feel harder to hold than they should.
  • Part of you wants support, and another part is scared of being pushed to open up before you are ready.

In the most isolated capital in the country, far from eastern states family or out on a swing, so many people quietly carry this alone. You do not have to.

How Christina works

How gentle trauma work unfolds

There is no retelling of every detail and no forced catharsis here. We build safety first, then move at your pace, always leaving you in choice about what we touch and when.

Safety first

Before anything else, we settle the ground beneath you. We find what helps your body feel steadier, agree on how we will pause, and make sure you always know you can slow down or stop. Nothing meaningful happens until it feels safe enough.

Body-aware depth

Trauma lives in the nervous system as much as in memory, so we gently notice what shows up in the body, the tension, the numbness, the bracing. Working with these survival patterns, rather than around them, lets change happen without overwhelming you.

Root-level healing

Once there is enough safety, we can meet the deeper roots of what happened, softening old beliefs like it was my fault or I am not safe. This is where lasting relief tends to grow, gently and at a pace you set.

Reading that might help while you consider

Sometimes it helps to understand what is happening in your body before you speak to anyone. Our blog explores trauma responses, the freeze state, and gentle ways to feel steadier day to day.

Reading is never a substitute for support, but it can be a quiet first step while you decide.

What we can work through

Kinds of trauma we gently work with

Trauma takes many shapes, and none of them are too much to bring here. These are some of the experiences people in Perth reach out about.

Childhood and developmental wounds

When early years held fear, neglect, or instability, the effects can echo for decades. We work gently with these old patterns so the frightened younger part of you can finally feel some safety and care.

Shock, accident and single event trauma

A crash, a medical scare, a workplace incident, or a sudden loss can leave the nervous system stuck on alert. We help your system understand the danger has passed, without making you relive every moment.

Relationship and betrayal trauma

Hurt that came through people who were meant to be safe can shake your trust in yourself and others. Together we rebuild a sense of boundaries, worth, and safety at a pace that respects what you have been through.

Work, service and high-risk role strain

For FIFO, mining, resources, and defence backgrounds, exposure to danger, isolation, and pressure can build into something heavy. We make space for that strain without asking you to just tough it out.

About Christina

The counsellor behind Soul Counselling.

Christina Feyes founded Soul Counselling in 2016 and brings more than ten years of practice as a counsellor, with training across psychology, social work, and human services. She is a counsellor, not a psychologist, and she does not diagnose, prescribe, or promise to cure. She works with people right across Australia by video and phone.

Her way of working blends solid clinical understanding with warm, grounded counselling and a thread of intuitive insight. That means you get practical tools for daily life as well as space for the deeper layers, the parts of trauma that words alone do not always reach.

Common questions

Before you book.

If your question is not here, the free 15-minute assessment is the easiest way to ask it.

Is trauma counselling expensive?

You can start without paying anything. Soul Counselling offers a free 15-minute assessment with no card and no obligation, so you can see how it feels before deciding on anything further. It is a no pressure way to ask questions and get a sense of whether this feels right for you. There is genuinely nothing to lose by having that first gentle conversation.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to start?

No. You do not need a referral from a GP, and you do not need a diagnosis to reach out. Christina is a counsellor, not a psychologist, so she does not diagnose or prescribe. You are welcome to make contact directly and begin with the free 15-minute assessment whenever you feel ready, on your own terms.

Is there a Soul Counselling clinic in Perth?

There is no Perth clinic. Christina works entirely online with people across Perth and Western Australia, by video and phone. The only physical base is in Southport on the Gold Coast, so for WA the support comes to you wherever you are, from the CBD and Fremantle to Mandurah, the Perth Hills, and the resources regions further out.

Does online counselling suit FIFO or shift rosters?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons people here choose it. Sessions can be arranged around swings, night shifts, and long drives, and you can join from home or from camp accommodation while you are away. You do not have to wait until you are back in Perth or line up with clinic hours to get support that fits your working life.

Will I have to retell everything that happened to me?

No. There is no forced disclosure and no requirement to relive every detail. Trauma work here begins with safety, and we only ever touch what you choose to, when you choose to. Some people share very little of the story and still find real relief, because we work with how the past lives in your body and nervous system now, not by making you narrate it.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no set number, because everyone arrives with a different history and pace. Some people come for a short season of support, others for longer, deeper work. We check in together about what is helping and what you need, and you stay in choice the whole way. Nothing is locked in, and you are never committed beyond the next step that feels right.

Is online trauma counselling private and effective?

Yes. Sessions are held over a private, secure connection, and you can join from any space where you feel safe and unlikely to be interrupted. Many people find that being in their own environment actually helps them feel steadier and more in control. For trauma in particular, that added sense of safety and choice can make the work gentler and more sustainable.

Can Christina help in a crisis or emergency?

Soul Counselling is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, please call 000. For support right now you can reach Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, both available 24 hours. For trauma specifically, the Blue Knot Helpline on 1300 657 380 offers specialised guidance. Please reach out to these services first if you need urgent help, and consider counselling for ongoing support afterwards.

A gentle first step, whenever you feel ready

You can begin with a free 15-minute assessment, with no card and no obligation. It is simply a chance to talk, to ask questions, and to notice whether Christina feels safe enough for you to take a next step. There is genuinely nothing to lose.

Trauma support across Perth

Trauma carried alone in Australia’s most isolated city

Perth is the most isolated capital in the country, and that distance is felt deeply when trauma is carried far from eastern states family and old support networks. The large FIFO, mining, and resources workforce lives with isolation on site, demanding camp culture, and genuinely high-risk work, and reaching help around a swing is hard. There is a significant defence and veteran presence here too, where exposure and service strain can linger for years. With regional services stretched thin across an enormous state, being able to meet online matters more here than almost anywhere. This is real support that reaches you wherever you are in WA.

  • For people in the CBD, Fremantle, and Joondalup wanting steady, private trauma support close to home.
  • For Rockingham, Mandurah, and Midland residents who would rather not travel far while feeling raw.
  • For the Perth Hills and outer communities where in person trauma counselling can be scarce.
  • For workers flying out to the resources regions who need support that fits around a roster.

Sessions are held online and by phone across Perth and all of Australia, so support fits around your life. You can also explore all Perth counselling services.

Safe enough to do the work

Support that fits a FIFO roster and a busy WA life

Getting to a clinic between swings, shifts, or long drives is not always realistic, and that should never be the reason trauma goes unspoken. Working online removes that barrier.

You work with a qualified counsellor in trauma-aware, paced sessions where you stay in control the whole way through. You can join from wherever feels safe, home, a quiet room, or even camp accommodation on a swing, and nothing is ever pushed before you are ready. We go at your speed, honour your choices, and build the safety first, so the work supports your nervous system rather than overwhelming it.
