Counsellor Christina Feyes offering online anxiety counselling to Canberra clients

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia, affecting around one in six adults, or roughly 17.2 percent of the population. In the ACT the pressure runs a little higher, with the ABS 2020 to 2022 study finding about 25.5 percent of Canberrans, close to one in four, experienced a mental disorder in the previous twelve months.

What anxiety can look like when you live and work in Canberra

  • A mind that will not slow down, replaying emails, meetings and conversations long after the working day in Civic or Barton has ended.
  • A body that reacts before you do, with a tight chest, a racing heart, shallow breath or a wave of panic that seems to arrive from nowhere.
  • Quietly stepping back from social events, phone calls or new opportunities because they feel like too much to manage right now.
  • The private exhaustion of looking composed and capable all day while feeling stretched thin underneath, the familiar shape of high-functioning anxiety.
  • A deeper current beneath the symptoms, perhaps old pressure to perform, to hold everything together, or to never be seen struggling.

You can be the person who delivers under deadline and still be the person who feels frightened inside, and both of those things deserve care.

How Christina works

How anxiety counselling works with Soul Counselling

There is no rush and no script. We begin by understanding what your anxiety is trying to protect you from, then work gently at a pace your nervous system can trust. Sessions are held online by video or by phone, so support fits around your life in Canberra rather than adding another commute.

Understanding your nervous system

Anxiety is not a character flaw, it is a protective system doing its job a little too well. Together we map what sets it off and what it is guarding, so it stops feeling random and starts making sense. When you understand the pattern, you regain a sense of choice, and that alone can soften a great deal of the fear.

Practical tools you can use

You will leave sessions with grounding, breathing and thought-shifting tools you can use in a meeting, on a Belconnen commute or lying awake at two in the morning. These are simple, repeatable and yours to keep. We practise them together so they feel natural rather than like one more thing you are supposed to be doing perfectly.

Gently reaching the root

Once the day to day feels steadier, we can look at what sits underneath, the beliefs, expectations or experiences that keep anxiety switched on. This is where lasting change lives. We move slowly and only ever with your consent, so the work feels supportive rather than exposing.

Go deeper

A little reading while you decide

If you are not ready to reach out yet, that is completely okay. Our blog offers calm, practical writing on worry, panic, overthinking and living with a busy mind, so you can start to feel understood in your own time.

What we can work through

Anxiety themes we often work with

Anxiety wears many faces. Whatever shape yours takes, you do not have to make sense of it alone. These are some of the experiences Canberra clients bring most often.

Worry and overthinking

When your mind runs ahead to every possible outcome, rest feels impossible. We work on loosening the grip of constant analysis so your thoughts stop feeling like threats and start feeling like thoughts you can hold more lightly.

Panic and physical symptoms

Racing heart, tight chest, dizziness or that sudden urge to escape can be frightening, especially when they arrive without warning. We build steady ways to calm your body and meet panic without fear of it, so the sensations lose their power over you.

Perfectionism and pressure

The drive to get everything right can quietly become the thing that wears you down. We gently examine impossibly high standards and the fear behind them, making room for you to be human without feeling that everything is at stake.

Burnout and feeling stretched thin

Sometimes anxiety is the sound of a nervous system that has been running on empty for too long. We look at what has been depleting you and rebuild a sense of steadiness, so you can function without paying for it in exhaustion.

Counsellor Christina Feyes who supports Canberra clients with anxiety online

About Christina

The counsellor behind Soul Counselling.

Soul Counselling was founded in 2016 by Christina Feyes, a counsellor with training in psychology, social work and human services and more than ten years supporting people through anxiety, overwhelm and hard seasons. She is a counsellor rather than a psychologist, and she works with clients right across Australia, including throughout Canberra and the ACT, entirely online.

Christina blends grounded, practical counselling with genuine warmth and intuitive insight. That means you get real tools for the everyday moments when anxiety flares, alongside space to explore the deeper layers underneath when you are ready. The pace is always yours, and you are met as a whole person, not a list of symptoms.

Common questions

Before you book.

If your question is not here, the free 15-minute assessment is the easiest way to ask it.

Is anxiety counselling expensive?

We never publish set fees on this page because everyone starts from a different place, and the first step costs you nothing. You are welcome to a free 15 minute assessment with no card details and no obligation, simply a chance to talk, ask questions and see whether it feels right. There is genuinely nothing to lose by reaching out, and it can be a calm, pressure-free way to begin.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to start?

No referral is needed and you do not need a diagnosis or a mental health plan to begin. As a counsellor, Christina does not diagnose, prescribe or treat conditions, she supports you with the worry, overwhelm and pressure you are living with. You can simply book your free 15 minute chat and start from wherever you are right now, with no formal paperwork required.

Is there a Soul Counselling clinic in Canberra?

There is no Soul Counselling clinic in Canberra. All support for Canberra and the ACT is offered online by video or by phone, which means you can be seen from home in Gungahlin, Tuggeranong or the inner south without travelling across town. Soul Counselling’s only physical base is in Southport on the Gold Coast, so for Canberra clients everything happens online.

Is online counselling private and discreet?

Yes, privacy is taken seriously. Sessions happen wherever you feel safe and unseen, whether that is home, your car or a quiet room, so there is no waiting room where you might run into a colleague. In a small, interconnected city like Canberra that discretion matters, and online counselling lets you seek support without it becoming visible to your workplace or wider circle.

Can I book around a demanding work schedule?

Yes. Because sessions are online and by phone, there is no travel time to factor in, which makes it much easier to fit support around meetings, deadlines and shifting workloads. We can find a time that works with your week rather than forcing your week around it. Many Canberra clients value being able to log in from home and then step straight back into their day.

Where do I actually start?

You start with a free 15 minute assessment. It is a relaxed conversation where you can share a little about what is going on, ask anything you like and get a feel for how Christina works. There is no pressure to continue and no obligation at all. If it feels right, we plan a first session, and if not, you have still taken a caring step for yourself.

Does online counselling actually help with anxiety and panic?

Yes, it can be very effective. Anxiety and panic respond to understanding, connection and practical tools, all of which translate well to video and phone sessions. Many people find it easier to open up from the comfort of their own space. You will learn grounding and calming techniques you can use in the moment, wherever you are, so support does not stay locked inside a session.

What if I am in crisis right now?

Soul Counselling is not a crisis service and cannot offer emergency support. If you are in immediate danger or worried about your safety, please call 000. For urgent emotional support you can reach Lifeline any time on 13 11 14, or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. These services are free, confidential and available around the clock, and reaching out to them is a strong and caring thing to do.

A calm first step, whenever you are ready

If any of this sounds like your experience, you are warmly invited to book a free 15 minute assessment. There is no card required and no obligation, just a gentle conversation to see whether this feels like the right fit for you. You have nothing to lose and a little more steadiness to gain.

Anxiety support across Canberra

Anxiety in a city that is very good at looking composed

Canberra is a high-achieving public service and professional city with a strong culture of staying capable, measured and in control. That composure is a real strength, and it can also become a mask that hides perfectionism, high-functioning anxiety and slow-building burnout. Many people here are posted in from elsewhere, far from family and old friends, and in a small, interconnected city discretion matters, so struggle often stays private.

  • Professionals and public servants who hold it together all day and unravel quietly at night.
  • People far from family and support networks after relocating to Canberra for work.
  • Perfectionists carrying deadline and workload pressure without room to exhale.
  • Anyone who wants genuinely private support without running into someone they know.

Sessions are held online and by phone across Canberra and all of Australia. You can also explore all Canberra counselling services.

Support that fits a demanding schedule

Discreet anxiety counselling that works around your work life

You should not have to choose between getting support and protecting your privacy or your workload. Because Soul Counselling is fully online, there is no waiting room in Woden or Civic to be seen in, and no clinic to travel to across town.

Christina is a qualified counsellor offering anxiety counselling by video and phone, at times that fit around a busy Canberra schedule. Between sessions you carry practical, nervous-system based tools you can use quietly at your desk, on the drive home or during a restless night. The whole approach is gentle, unhurried and built around what actually helps you, not what looks impressive on paper.
