Counsellor Christina Feyes offering online anxiety counselling to Darwin clients

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia, affecting around 1 in 6 adults, or roughly 17.2 percent. Numbers like this can still undercount very remote areas, and with the Northern Territory carrying some of the thinnest mental health staffing in the country, many people in the Top End wait a long time for support that never quite arrives.

What anxiety can feel like up here

  • A mind that will not switch off, replaying conversations and running through everything that could go wrong before it has even happened.
  • A body that is already on alert, a tight chest, a pounding heart, shallow breath, or the rush of a panic wave that seems to come from nowhere.
  • Quietly steering around the calls, the plans or the places that set the nerves off, so life slowly shrinks to feel safe.
  • The private exhaustion of looking calm and capable all day while your insides are churning, and no one around you can tell.
  • A deeper root underneath it all, old pressure, grief, loss or a nervous system that learned long ago it had to stay watchful to be safe.

When the build-up sits heavy and sleep gets thin, and family are a long flight away, that background hum of worry can grow louder than it deserves to be.

How Christina works

How this kind of support actually works

Anxiety is not a flaw in your character. It is a nervous system trying hard to protect you, just working overtime. The aim is not to switch that system off, but to help it feel safe enough to settle. Here is what we lean on together.

We understand your anxiety

Before anything changes, we make sense of it. We look gently at what your anxiety is guarding against and when it first learned to stay switched on, so it stops feeling random and starts making sense.

We calm the body first

You cannot think your way out of a racing heart. We start with simple, practical tools for breath, grounding and the physical alarm, so your body has somewhere steadier to stand between sessions.

We work with the deeper layer

Once the edge softens, we can gently tend the root, the beliefs, pressures or old hurts feeding the worry, combining grounded counselling with intuitive insight so the change holds.

Go deeper

Reading for the quiet moments

Sometimes it helps to understand what is happening in your body before you say a word to anyone. Our writing on anxiety, panic and calming an overactive nervous system is there whenever you want to read at your own pace.

What we can work through

Common threads we work with

Anxiety rarely arrives on its own. These are some of the everyday shapes it takes for the Darwin and Top End clients who reach out.

Worry and overthinking

The looping thoughts, the worst-case rehearsals, the mind that treats every uncertainty as a threat. We slow the spin and help you meet your thoughts with a bit more space and a lot less fear.

Panic and the body on alert

The racing heart, the tight chest, the sudden surge that feels frightening in itself. We work with what is happening physically so panic loses its grip and stops running the show.

Distance and loneliness

Living in Australia’s most remote capital, far from eastern-states or overseas family, can leave a quiet ache and a low, steady worry. We make room for that isolation without pretending it is small.

Pressure and burnout

Shift work, Defence life, a transient community and long humid stretches all take a toll. When you are stretched thin and running on empty, we help you find steadier ground.

Common questions

Before you book.

If your question is not here, the free 15-minute assessment is the easiest way to ask it.

Is anxiety counselling expensive?

We do not list prices or push you into anything, and there are no fees to talk about before you even start. You begin with a free 15-minute assessment, with no card details and no obligation, just a calm conversation to see whether this feels like a fit for you. It is a genuinely low-pressure way to test the water, so there is really nothing to lose by reaching out and finding out.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to start?

No referral is needed, and you do not need a diagnosis or a doctor’s letter to reach out. Soul Counselling is a counselling service, so we do not diagnose, prescribe or treat conditions. You can simply get in touch directly and start with the free 15-minute chat. If you would like to involve your GP alongside counselling, that is entirely your choice, but nothing has to be in place before we talk.

Is there a Soul Counselling clinic in Darwin?

No, there is no clinic or office in Darwin. All sessions across the Top End are held online by video and by phone, so you meet from home, from work on a break, or wherever feels private and comfortable. Soul Counselling’s only physical base is in Southport on the Gold Coast, but the online model means you receive the same warm, personal support without needing to travel anywhere.

Can online counselling really help if I am in a remote community?

Yes. Online and phone sessions were made for exactly this. As long as you have a phone line or an internet connection, distance stops being the deciding factor in whether you can get support. For people in the Top End who might otherwise face long waits or no local service at all, being able to speak with a warm, qualified counsellor from your own space can make steady, ongoing help genuinely possible.

Does this suit Defence members or shift workers?

It can suit both well. Because sessions are online and by phone, appointments can flex around postings, rosters and unpredictable hours in a way that a fixed clinic often cannot. If you are carrying the particular pressures of Defence life or the fatigue of shift work, we work at a pace that fits your reality. Defence members can also access the all-hours support line on 1800 628 036 alongside counselling.

Where do I actually start?

You start with one small step, the free 15-minute assessment. You can call 0479 144 561 or reach out through the site, and we will arrange a time. That first chat is simply a chance to talk about what is going on and to feel whether working together sits right for you. There is no pressure to book anything further, and no obligation at all, just a gentle, unhurried beginning.

Can online sessions genuinely help with anxiety and panic?

Yes. Anxiety and panic are as workable over video or phone as they are in a room, and many people find it easier to open up from a space that already feels safe. We focus on understanding your anxiety, calming the physical alarm with practical tools, and gently tending the deeper roots. You take real, usable strategies away with you, so support carries on quietly between our conversations too.

What if I am in crisis or need urgent help right now?

Soul Counselling is not a crisis or emergency service, and there may be times you need immediate support. If life is in danger, call 000. Lifeline is available any time on 13 11 14, and Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. For culturally safe support, 13YARN on 13 92 76 offers a yarn with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander crisis supporters. Please reach out to these services when you need help right away, and consider counselling for the steadier work afterwards.

A calmer place to begin

You do not have to have it all worked out before you reach out. Start with a free 15-minute assessment, no card, no obligation, just a gentle conversation to see if this feels right. There is genuinely nothing to lose, and a calmer nervous system to gain. Call 0479 144 561 when you are ready.

Anxiety support across Darwin

Anxiety help that reaches the whole Top End

Living in Australia’s most remote capital carries a particular weight. The long distance from family down south or overseas can leave a quiet loneliness humming under everything, and the build-up and wet-season heat and humidity often wear down sleep and patience until restlessness tips into anxiety. With local services stretched thin and waits that drag on, many people simply go without.

  • Support for people in the Darwin CBD carrying work stress, panic or a mind that will not rest.
  • Anxiety counselling for Palmerston families juggling pressure, isolation and thin local options.
  • Steadier ground for the northern suburbs, Casuarina and Nightcliff, when overwhelm builds.
  • A calmer way through for anyone across the wider Top End who feels too far from help.

Sessions are held online and by phone across Darwin and all of Australia. You can also explore all Darwin counselling services.

Care that travels with you

Support that reaches remote corners of the Top End

Because everything happens online or by phone, distance stops being a barrier, whether you are in Darwin, a Defence posting, or a smaller community out bush. It is also worth knowing that culturally safe, Aboriginal-led support exists across the Territory, and 13YARN on 13 92 76 offers culturally safe yarning for anyone who would value it. We do not claim to speak for or specialise in First Nations experience.

What you get is a qualified, warm counsellor you can reach from wherever you are, plus practical nervous-system tools to use between sessions when the worry rises. The pace stays gentle, led by you, so support fits around real life in the Top End rather than adding one more pressure.
