Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia, affecting around one in six adults, close to 17.2 per cent of us. Here in Tasmania the picture is felt keenly, with the ABS 2020 to 2022 study finding that around 19.8 per cent of Tasmanians aged 16 to 85 lived with a mental disorder in the previous twelve months, so if worry has become your constant companion, you are far from alone.

What anxiety can feel like day to day

  • A mind that will not switch off, replaying conversations and rehearsing every worst case long after everyone else has gone to sleep.
  • A body that sounds the alarm on its own, with a racing heart, tight chest, shallow breath or the sudden surge of a panic attack.
  • Quietly saying no to plans, drives and rooms full of people, then feeling your world shrink a little more each time.
  • The deep tiredness of holding it all together and looking calm on the outside while everything inside is bracing for the next thing.
  • A sense that the worry sits on top of something older, a grief, a pressure or a fear of being truly seen, that has never had the room to be heard.

In a small southern city through a long dark winter, that weight can feel heavier and lonelier than it should, and it deserves care.

How Christina works

How anxiety counselling works with Soul Counselling

There is no script and no rush. We begin by understanding your anxiety as it actually shows up in your life, then work at a pace your nervous system can trust, blending practical tools with a deeper, gentler look at what lies beneath the worry.

We start where you are

Your first sessions are simply about being heard without judgement. We map what triggers your worry, when the panic tends to arrive and how it moves through your body, so you begin to understand your anxiety rather than fear it. Nothing is pushed. You set the pace, and Christina follows your lead.

Calming the nervous system

Anxiety lives in the body, so we work with the body. You learn grounding, breath and settling practices you can use in real moments, in the car, at your desk or awake at 3am. These are small, repeatable skills that help your system come down from high alert and remember it is safe.

Understanding the deeper roots

Over time we gently explore where the anxiety learned to protect you. Old patterns, pressure and unspoken hurts often sit underneath the surface worry. As those layers are understood and softened, the anxiety usually loosens its grip, and life begins to feel wider and more your own again.

What we can work through

Anxiety concerns we often work with

Anxiety wears many faces. These are some of the common threads Christina supports Hobart clients through, and yours may be a blend of several.

Generalised worry and overthinking

When your mind treats everything as urgent and rest feels impossible, we work to slow the spin and help you find some quiet ground to stand on again.

Panic attacks and physical symptoms

Racing heart, tight chest and that wave of dread can be frightening. We help you understand what is happening in your body and build steadier, kinder responses to it.

Social anxiety and being seen

In a close-knit city where paths cross often, fear of judgement can grow loud. We gently work on the pressure to perform and the longing to simply feel at ease around others.

Health and future worry

When housing pressure, cost of living or your health keep the what ifs running, we make space for the fear underneath and steady, workable ways to carry it.

Common questions

Before you book.

If your question is not here, the free 15-minute assessment is the easiest way to ask it.

Is anxiety counselling expensive?

There are no fees or prices to weigh up before you start. Soul Counselling offers a free 15-minute assessment with no card required and no obligation, so you can get a real feel for whether this suits you before deciding anything. It is a low pressure way to begin, and you genuinely have nothing to lose by having that first gentle conversation. When you are ready, you can call 0479 144 561 to arrange it.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to begin?

No referral is needed and you do not need a formal diagnosis to reach out. You can contact Soul Counselling directly and simply start with the free 15-minute assessment. Please note that Christina is a counsellor, not a psychologist, and does not diagnose, prescribe or treat medical conditions. What she offers is warm, practical counselling support for the worry, panic and overwhelm you are living with day to day.

Is there a Soul Counselling clinic in Hobart?

There is no Hobart clinic. Christina works entirely online and by phone, and her only physical base is in Southport on the Gold Coast. The good news is that anxiety counselling reaches you wherever you are, whether that is the Hobart CBD, Sandy Bay, Glenorchy, Kingston, the eastern shore or regional Tasmania, with no drive and no waiting room.

Can online counselling really help with anxiety and panic?

Yes. Anxiety and panic respond well to online and phone counselling, and many people find it easier to open up from the comfort and privacy of home. You still build a genuine, trusting relationship with Christina, and you still learn real grounding, breath and settling tools for the anxious moments. For a lot of clients, not having to travel or sit in a busy waiting room actually makes the whole thing feel calmer from the start.

How do I keep this private in a small city where everyone seems to know everyone?

This is a very common worry in Hobart, and it is completely valid. Because sessions are held online or by phone from your own home, there is no local waiting room to be recognised in and no chance of running into someone you know. Your sessions are confidential, and you can take them somewhere quiet and private, which many people find is exactly the discretion they were hoping for.

I have heard local waitlists are long. How soon can I start?

Local services in Tasmania are stretched, and waits can be long, which is part of why online support helps. Soul Counselling is not bound by a regional waitlist, so you can usually begin with a free 15-minute assessment far sooner. If anxiety is weighing on you now, you do not have to sit on a list for months before anyone listens.

I am not sure where to start. What is the first step?

The simplest first step is the free 15-minute assessment. You do not need to have the right words ready or your story figured out. It is just a gentle, no obligation chat to help you feel out whether working with Christina feels right, and to talk through what has been happening. From there you can decide, in your own time, whether you would like to continue. You can call 0479 144 561 to begin.

Does counselling help through the long Tasmanian winter?

It can help a great deal. The long, dark, cold Hobart winter can deepen low mood and make anxiety feel heavier, and having steady support through those months matters. Regular sessions give you a consistent point of contact and practical tools to carry you through the darker weeks, so you are not weathering the season alone. Care continues no matter the weather, because there is no drive to put you off.

What if I am in crisis or need urgent help right now?

Soul Counselling is not a crisis service and cannot provide emergency support. If you are in crisis or worried about your safety, please reach out now. You can call Lifeline any time on 13 11 14, or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. If there is an immediate risk to life, call 000 straight away. These services are staffed around the clock and are there for you in the moments that cannot wait.

A calmer starting point is closer than you think

If you are ready to feel less at the mercy of the worry, begin with a free 15-minute assessment. There is no card required and no obligation, just a gentle conversation to see whether this feels right for you. You have nothing to lose and a little more calm to gain. Call 0479 144 561 when you are ready.

Anxiety support across Hobart

Anxiety help for Hobart and southern Tasmania, without the wait

Hobart is a close and beautiful city, yet that closeness can make anxiety harder to speak about when it feels like everyone knows everyone. Local mental health services are stretched thin, waitlists can run long, and for regional Tasmanians the drive alone can be a barrier. Add long, dark, cold winters and a sharp housing and cost of living squeeze, and it is little wonder so many people are quietly holding a great deal.

  • Support you can start soon, rather than sitting on a long local waitlist.
  • Sessions from home, with no drive in from Kingston, Clarence or regional Tasmania.
  • Steady care through the darker winter months when low mood and worry often deepen.
  • A private space to talk in a small city where being seen can feel exposing.

Sessions are held online and by phone across Hobart and all of Australia. You can also explore all Hobart counselling services.

Private and unhurried

Anxiety support without a local waiting room

For many Hobartians, part of the worry is simply being recognised walking into a clinic. Working online removes that, so you can seek help from the privacy of your own home, on your own terms.

Christina is a qualified counsellor offering unhurried sessions by video or phone, wherever you are in Tasmania. Between sessions you carry practical, nervous system focused tools you can use in real moments, and the whole approach stays gentle, paced and led by you, never pushed.
